            Resveratrol as reported by the media, with excited anticipation of its potential in the metabolic support of the immune system, anti-aging, weight loss, sports performance, cancer concerns, and life extension. Resveratrol, is also found in red grapes, fruits, berries and root extracts. It was first isolated from Japanese Knotweed, Hy Zhang Root Extract (Polygonum capsidatum). 

The bio-active chemical configuration is 3,5,4’-tri-hydroxy-trans-stilbene. This is a potent antioxidant.

Resveratrol is currently the single most studied substance in the world.  There are more than a few varieties and a number of sources. Recently, red wine has been identified as a potent source of resveratrol. The problem has been, one would have to drink 1000 bottles of wine a day to obtain a therapeutic amount. It is also found in the Japanese knotweed. Dr. David Sinclair, PhD and a biologist and gerontologist at Harvard University , discovered a means of concentrating it by 1000 times so the pill form would contain the equivalent of that much wine. Resveratrol is the substance behind the so-called “French paradox” whereby French people living in southern France eat a high fat diet yet have no heart disease – it is the Resveratrol in their red wine that completes the paradox.

 

Samurai warriors carried Japanese knotweed and regularly chewed on the shrub for strength – of course, they didn’t know what they were taking. Resveratrol is a flavinoid that activates the SIRT-1 anti-aging gene.

 

www.pubmed.gov and www.pogofrog.com have large amounts of very current information about these substances.  Pubmed, the National Institutes of Health article file, has over 2386 current articles about resveratrol alone. An article published March 21, 2008, showed that the combination of resveratrol and quercetin exert powerful anti-obesity effects by inhibiting differentiation of fat cell precursors into true fat cells, and by inducing apoptosis—a medical term for programmed cell death–inducing the death of already established fat cells.

 

Resveratrol has COX-2 inhibitor qualities similar to Celebrex (without the risk of heart attacks) and many individuals report dramatic reductions in joint pain from taking the substance.
